Porcelain veneers are a non-invasive and versatile way to correct numerous cosmetic problems with your front teeth. Our office provides veneers in Plano that can transform your smile in two simple visits. Please contact us for more information if you have chipped, pitted, cracked, crooked, or misaligned teeth.
Porcelain Veneer Basics
Veneers are made of thin shells of porcelain specially molded and color-matched to match your natural teeth. They can be shaped to make your teeth appear more even, closer together, straighter, or whiter.
To apply veneers, your cosmetic dentist removes a very thin layer of enamel from the front surface of your teeth and makes a cast that is used to manufacture the veneers. Temporary veneers protect your teeth during the manufacturing process. Then, you return to the dentist to have the permanent veneers applied using a special bonding agent. The process is very simple and considerably less invasive than the complex restructuring of the teeth necessary for placing dental crowns.
Durability of Veneers
When they are bonded to the teeth, veneers become strong and durable, much like natural enamel. However, veneers will last longer if you take certain precautions in your everyday oral hygiene and care. Some things to keep in mind include:
- Tell your dental hygienist you have veneers before your teeth are cleaned
- Use a soft to medium toothbrush to prevent abrading the surface of the veneers
- Don’t bite hard objects, as this can crack or chip the edges of your veneers
- Avoid staining agents—these can stain veneers in the same way they stain your natural teeth
